How Can I Know If I Have Saving Faith?

William Guthrie, a Scottish Divine who lived 350 years ago, preached a sermon on the same text as I did last week. In it he listed (almost as though he was a blogger)evidences you could look to in your life to determine if your faith was genuine. I didn't have time to include this in my message, but I thought it might be helpful.

Evidences of Genuine Faith

  1. Those excellent graces, gifts, and fruits of the Spirit are where this grace of faith is (Gal. 5:22).
  2. Where those Christian virtues and graces are linked together in a chain there is faith (2 Peter 1:5-8).
  3. Wherever there is true faith there is love to the object of faith (1 Peter 1:8).
  4. Where faith is, there is sincere love to all the saints of God.
  5. Where faith is, there is a patient waiting for the promises. Faith makes no haste.
  6. Where faith is, there is patient enduring of affliction.
  7. Where it is, it weans the heart and affections from the earth and earthly things; they are not desirous of them (Gal. 6:14).
  8. Faith, where it is exercise, resists temptations to sin.
  9. Faith is serious and studious of holiness in the heart, life and conversation. Believing will not tolerate sin in the heart or conversation (1 Peter 1:15-16).
  10. Again, where faith is, oh! but it puts folk upon being serious and fervent in prayer to God (Mark 9:24).
  11. Were faith is, persons are very sensible of the unbelief of their hearts; and gladly would they have their unbelief cured.
  12. Faith leads the person in whom it is to make, conscience of yielding obedience to God only in Christ's strength.
  13. Where faith is they are longing for Christ's second coming, that they may be in His company never to be out of it again (2 Cor. 5:1).
I trust this list will prompt you to respond to God in true faith!
