Why A Week of Prayer? (Part 1)

On June 4-8 New Life Church will be having a week of prayer. We will gather at each of our three locations over the course of this week to seek God together (look for more info. in the coming days about the schedule). Maybe you are asking, why would a church do a week of prayer? Or, better yet, why should I be involved in my church's week of prayer? Let me give you three quick answers that I think will cover both of those questions:

  1. We pray because God tells us to. (Ephesians 6:18, Colossians 4:2, 1 Thessalonians 5:17)
  2. We pray because it is good for us. (Psalm 100, Philippians 4:6-7)
  3. We pray because it accomplishes God's work in the world. (John 14:12-14)
Would you take a moment right now and put "Week of Prayer" on your calendar for June 4-8, and plan to spend time with your church family in prayer that week?

Global Outreach Sunday

This Sunday is Global Outreach Sunday at New Life Church. Stephanie Rogers (daughter of Wes and Shelley Rogers) will be sharing a brief testimony in each of our morning services and at length during the evening service. Stephanie is planning to go out as a missionary with Josiah Venture to Slovenia in January, and is in the process of raising support. If you would like to find our more about Stephanie's missionary plans, click here.

Another exciting part of Global Outreach Night will be a live video interview with Hunter Haugen and Brian Buhler in India. Hunter has been in India for almost two months on a short term trip helping Brian in his crucial work among the Dalit people. If you have facebook, you can check out Hunter's latest pictures here.

Global Outreach Night will also include a touching video about the Middle School effort to raise money for Dalit Children, and a challenging testimony from a High School Student about the impact of a mission trip on a life. You won't want to miss this exciting evening. Global Outreach Night is this Sunday, November 8th at 6:00 PM at New Life Church Riverfalls.

Cadence Dessert Saturday @7:00 PM

Paul and Beryl Metko will be at New Life Church this weekend as a part of Global Outreach Weekend. On Saturday night at 7:00 PM at New Life Robinwood, they will be sharing about their ministry with Cadence (a ministry to Military Personnel all over the world). The Metkos oversee all of the Cadence Missionaries on the West Coast. Cadence operates several hospitality houses in close proximity to military bases. These houses are used as a "home away from home" for military personnel. The missionaries seek to build a family atmosphere where solderiers can become fully devoted disciples of Jesus Christ.

This summer, New Life Church is planning a mission trip (June 24-July 6) to help out at one of these hospitality houses in Eagle River, Alaska. The missionaries there are Dan and Barb Evans. They, along with their two children Caleb & Audrey, have operated the Mountain Chapel Hospitality House for the last year or so. Already they have built some great relationships and seen many soldiers grow in their relationships with Jesus Christ.

On Saturday night Paul and Beryl will share about the ministry at Mountain Chapel along with an overview of Cadence work around the world. If you have any desire to be a part of this mission trip to minister to military personnel through construction and a ministry retreat, this would be a great time to find out more information.

Below I have posted a few slides which speak of the Evans vision for Mountain Chapel:

Recession -- What Recession?

While many indicators point to a world-wide recession, one overlooked indicator would cause you to ask, "What recession?" The generosity of God's people does not show any sign of letting up on account of the external economic environment.

I just received word from Pregnancy Resource Center that New Life Church has given $1156.10 to date. We began our annual "baby bottle drive" on Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. Thank you for your generosity.

If that were all, it would represent well a generous church, but there's more! Below is a video of the middle school auction which supports Dalit Children in India. You can read Scott Haugen's account of it underneath the video.

Over 65 excited New Life members and visitors from the ages of 8 to 80 gathered for our 4th Annual Middle School Auction to raise money to support the Dalit Children and the Buhlers on March the 4th.

All the items and services for the auction were contributed by Middle School students and other members. It was commented that, "the Middle Schoolers have really learned that giving of what you have in the way of services like mowing lawns, or possessions like a bike you love, can be used by God for His Kingdom work!"

The Middle School class has adopted two Dalit students about their same age to provide food, clothing and schooling. Their prayer is that the Alok and Sowjayna will have a chance to hear about Jesus and get an education that will allow them to rise above the caste system in India that holds them down.

The first year the Auction raised $400. Our goal was to double that the second year, and through sacrificail giving and generous patrons that was accomplished. Last year we raised $1032 and this year it was amazingly doubled again to $2081!

Please take 4 minutes to look at the video to see some of the highlights from the Auction!!

Mission Connexion Northwest Jan. 16-17

Hello New Life Church,

If there is any way you can open up your schedule to attend part or all of Mission Connexion Northwest this weekend, it will be well worth your effort. Hundreds Mission Agencies and Missionaries from around the world will be at Sunset Presbyterian Church in Beaverton for this 1 1/2 day conference that will help you learn how to make a difference in your world. This conference is all about helping us fulfill the great commission here at home and around the world. There are great speakers and over 100 informative break out sessions to choose from. You can see the complete schedule, break out topics, and driving directions at www.missionconnexion.com.

Also, I met a neat couple this week, Kerry and Josie Sinclair, who work with an organization called ISI. Their ministry reaches out to international students around the Portland area. They help to pair Christians with International Students as English Language Partners and Friendship Partners. They will have a booth at Mission Connexion, along with the hundreds of other booths for mission agencies. Stop by and see them, and tell them I sent you!

Luis Palau Season of Service at West Linn High School

Last Sunday afternoon, August 24th, fifteen volunteers from New Life Church joined dozens of other volunteers from Rolling Hills Community Church to beautify the grounds surrounding West Linn High School. The team from New Life Church focused on sprucing up the administrator's parking lot, located directly across from the high school on West "A" Street. Together they pulled weeks, swept, and blew debris from the parking lot, trimmed back ivy and blackberry bushes, painted speed bumps and swept the sidewalks. This project was part of a larger coordinated effort by Luis Palau Ministries, in conjunction with last weekend's Portland CityFest '08 event, to organize over 26,000 volunteers throughout the greater Portland area to put the love of Jesus Christ into action as the physical needs of a community are met.
